Back in November 2017, someone messaged me, “How can I find you when you come out to Joshua Tree National Park?” I replied “Hey, I’m not even sure when we will even be in that area. Maybe the beginning of 2018.” Mind you, we were probably in one of the center states like Nebraska or Iowa, on our to Colorado to leave Roo there for a month, flying home for the holidays and returning 1st week of January. Well we were approaching J Tree so I messaged Daniel back that we would be in the area with in the next couple days. He said when your here we can hang out and we could stay at his 60 acre property in the desert just outside of Joshua Tree. So we finally met up one night and hung out around the fire discussing van life things. He made us this delicious meal, Kurry chicken, but in a camp oven. First time ever seeing it in action and it came out great!
Basically you make a fire, give it some time to make embers, while talking shit and drinking beer. By the time you know it it’s time to throw on the food.
Something clicked when we were hanging out. We got along really well. So well we were only supposed to stay for one night and ended up staying for 4 nights. Mostly because we started a project and wanted to finish it before leaving.
Alright so a little about his property. It’s 60 acres in the Mojave Desert with a natural oasis and hot spring! It’s pretty neat to see water coming out of the ground year long at 85*F, non stop. This water is really rich in minerals with many health benefits so you know I went into the little hot tub he made.
This was us parked up at main camp.
So during the day one day he asked me if I wanted to build a yurt. I had no idea what a yurt was or how to build one. Me, not knowing what a yurt was but I like to build shit so I said yeah of coarse! So we walk over to this tarp he had covering these foam boards. I look at it and scratch my head thinking what we could build out of these foam boards. So then I asked him “what’s a yurt?” He said it’s basically a round structure with a pointed or tapered roof. This particular model was created for Burning man festival. Basically it’s a structure made of foam boards designed in a way to stand up to 60 mph winds, while made of insulation boards it will keep you warm in the cool night and cool in the hot day! Awesome right.
So we got to building and here are some photos of it going up.
Pretty cool in there! You can even stand up straight in the middle. Well it took us 3 days to finish it because we would only really work on it for 3-4 hours a day, mostly taking breaks…
Here is the final product!
Pretty cute right!
We built pretty much everything from scratch except the box spring and furniture.
If anyone is interested in renting it out he does have it listed on Air B&B. It’s the whole desert oasis feeling. Let me know and I can get you the info!
So we made a friend. A good friend at that! Super cool kid. We since then headed out into Joshua Tree! Read my post about Joshua tree to!
